AAUW HAYWARD/CASTRO VALLEY
BOARD MINUTES
May 8, 2007
Present: Helene Carr, Liz Bathgate, Ursula
Batz, Ruth Kuftin, Nancy Turner, Linda Slater, Joyce Morrison,
Peggy Robinson, Barbara Jones, Evelyn Gertler
The meeting was called to order at 6:35pm
by President Helene Carr.
Nancy Turner was commended for her fine
program at Spanish Ranch.
The minutes from the previous meeting
were approved as printed.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Darlene was unable
to attend so she sent along a report that indicates we have
103 members who have already paid their dues for next year.
Those who have not responded will be called by Debbie and
Darlene.
It was moved by Linda Slater and seconded
by Barbara Jones that the Opportunity Drawing for a free membership
be held at the Installation Luncheon. This passed unanimously.
Erica will be asked to do the drawing.
Linda stated that she had received a letter
from National indicating that we had overpaid our dues to
them last year by $51.00. This amount will be credited to
our branch.
At the State Convention, Helene Carr won
a free National and State Membership.
PROGRAM: Ruth Kuftin reported that 10
people have signed up to go to Scharfenberger Chocolate Factory
for the tour and lunch. She also indicated that interest in
Gamble Gardens was poor, so people will do that on their own.
Ruth has resigned from being Co-Vice President
of Program for 2007-8.
Nancy Turner reported that a total of
35 people attended the Fraud Program at Spanish Ranch. About
15 were branch members and the rest from Spanish Ranch or
presenters. One of the things stressed at the meeting was
the use of a cross-cut shredder.
At the meeting we had a quorum and elected
Audrey Wede as our Finance VP.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Linda Slater
and Peggy Robinson reported that our CD brought in $391.76
interest from last year and that total has been added to the
EF Fund which now has $2,530.89 in its account carried over
for next year.
Linda decided to stay with Bank of the
West and rolled over our CD at 4.89% interest which will come
due in November.
Tech Trek Donations: In the future all
personal donations to Tech Trek need to be made out to AAUW
CA SPF and sent to the Tech Trek Chair. She will then record
them and send them on to the treasurer who will forward them
to the state. This way the donations are fully tax deductible
for the donor. This year we received private donations of
$1,742.
Possible dates for the summer planning
meetings will be requested from the new board by email from
Linda. Once she gets the dates when the board is available,
she will set up the dates for the meetings.
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: Barbara Jones
reported that Mary Mayer has been in and out of the hospital
and is now under Hospice care at Baywood. She also reported
that JoEllen Rice’s mom just died at age 97.
TECH TREK: Evelyn Gertler mentioned that
the Camper Mixer Social will take place on June 9th at the
Orinda Community Center, Room 5 at 24 Orinda Way, Orinda.
She requests that anyone wishing to attend get in touch with
her for carpooling.
Evelyn gave us her resignation as chair
of Tech Trek. She will be happy to mentor who ever decides
to take on this project for next year.
INSTALLATION: The installation will take
place at Dino’s on June 2nd at 11:30am. They are offering
us 4 entrée selections at a good price. If we don’t
get enough members to register for the event, the telephone
tree will be activated. A person to do the installation of
the officers is still needed.
HAYWARD VOLUNTEER DINNER: A nomination
from our branch is in order. Linda Slater, Ursula Batz, Barbara
Jones and Evelyn Gertler are forming a committee to nominate
this person. The dinner event will be done differently with
each local non-profit nominating a Pearl of Hayward. The Pearls
will be invited to the picnic at Gail Steele’s home
where money is raised for the event. Once the Pearl is chosen,
the branch can write a biography of the person telling of
all their good works in Hayward.
CONVENTION: Linda Slater, Helene Carr
and Liz Bathgate all attended the State AAUW Convention in
Ontario. Linda explained how the bylaws were completely redone
by an ad-hoc committee in order to conform to new state laws
and save money. This was met with large resistance by a number
of people who never allowed the information from the committee
to be presented. A member from Oakland Branch moved that we
accept the new bylaws as written since they do not take effect
until a year from June. This motion passed with more than
the 2/3rd total needed. It passed because the branches now
have time to review the new bylaws and make recommendations
for revision at the next State Convention in April 2008. In
the newly proposed bylaws, the ad hoc committee recommended
that the State Board be made up of 16 members who would choose
their own officers. The changes would make the state a 501c4
Mutual Benefit organization which protects our officers from
being sued.
Linda proposed that we have a branch wide
meeting to go over the old and new bylaws as a branch so that
we can be more informed when we attend next year's convention.
NEW BUSINESS: Helene Carr talked about
the need for a membership committee which would work closely
with the program chair to increase membership. She talked
about the Fremont Branch and their methods of increasing their
membership these past three years. Helene suggested that we
pay closer attention to our college publications to see what
is of great interest to this group.
Helene also suggested that a committee
be formed which would go out into the community to get funds
to support Tech Trek and the local Scholarship. We could target
women owned businesses and perhaps gain some new members here
too.
There will be no Board Meeting in June.
The Board Exchange and pot luck dinner
will take place at Charlotte Sladek’s home on July 10th.
Respectfully submitted,
Liz Bathgate, Secretary
